Wireless lavalier microphone and receiver for phone videos

Why Your Phone Videos Sound Echoey (and How to Fix It)

You filmed a great video, but when you play it back, your voice sounds hollow, distant and echoey. It's one of the most common problems with phone videos, and it's easy to fix. Here's why it happens and what to do about it.

Why your phone videos sound echoey

Your phone's microphone picks up every sound in the room, not just your voice. When you stand a metre or more away, your voice bounces off hard surfaces like walls, floors and windows before it reaches the mic. That bounce is the echo.

Fix 1: Move closer to the phone

The closer your mouth is to the mic, the more your voice dominates and the less room sound gets in. If you're filming at arm's length or propping the phone across the room, expect echo.

Fix 2: Add soft things to the room

Hard, empty rooms make echo worse. Hang a blanket, close the curtains, add a rug or film near a sofa or bed. Soft surfaces absorb sound instead of bouncing it back.

Fix 3: Choose a better spot

Small rooms with furniture, like a bedroom with a bed and wardrobe, usually sound better than kitchens, bathrooms or empty rooms.

Fix 4: Cut background noise

Switch off fans, TVs and anything humming. Your phone hears all of it, and it makes the echo more noticeable.

Fix 5: Use a clip-on wireless lavalier mic (the biggest upgrade)

The tricks above help, but a lavalier mic fixes the problem at the source. It clips to your collar, a few centimetres from your mouth, so it records your voice clearly instead of the room. Because it's wireless, you can walk, move and film from further away without the sound changing.

Our Wireless Lavalier Microphone is plug and play, so there's no app to download. It has intelligent noise reduction to help keep your voice clear in noisy places, ultra-low latency (9 ms) so your audio stays in sync with your video, and up to 10 hours of battery, enough for a full day of filming. The mic weighs just 7g and the receiver 4g, so it's easy to clip on and carry. Range is up to 20 m in open space and 8 m with obstacles. In the box you get the rechargeable wireless microphone, the receiver, a USB charging cable and an English manual.

How to set it up in 3 steps

  1. Plug the receiver into your phone and switch on the mic.
  2. Clip the mic to your collar or shirt, about 15 to 20 cm from your mouth.
  3. Record a 10-second test and listen back before you film properly.

Quick checklist before you hit record

  • Am I close to the mic?
  • Is the room soft enough, or can I add a blanket?
  • Are fans and TVs off?
  • Did I do a test recording?

FAQ

Will a lavalier mic remove echo completely?
It reduces it a lot, because the mic is so close to your voice. In very empty rooms, adding soft furnishings still helps.

Do I need an app?
No. It's plug and play and connects in one step.

Does it work with my phone?
Pick the connector that matches your device: Lightning for iPhone, or USB-C for Android and others. 2-in-1 versions are also available for each connector.
